In 2022, Sussex wine gained Protected Designation of Origin status, and is often hailed as the heartland of English winemaking.
It is home to a remarkable concentration of vineyards and producers — contributing around a quarter of the country’s total wine output.
And tucked among Rye, Hastings, and Robertsbridge lies a SPARKLING secret: the Rother Wine Triangle — a cluster of six (initially seven) vineyards that are transforming this corner of East Sussex into one of England’s most exciting wine destinations.
Here, sunlit slopes, ancient woodlands, and sea-kissed air, combine to create a unique terroir, producing wines with real personality and finesse.
And Benchwood House enjoys a prime spot in the Rother Wine Triangle, making it effortless to journey among the estates from your doorstep, sample their distinctive wines, and learn about their amazing history.
Each vineyard brings its own story: from pioneering organic estates and boutique sparkling wine producers to eco-luxury hideaways and family-run havens that blend hospitality with heart.
Carr Taylor Vineyards, the local early commercial wine pioneers, has ceased trading in August 2025, and the business is no longer within the Rother Wine Triangle. We wish Linda and David, now in their eighties, a wonderful retirement.

The closest vineyard in the triangle is Charles Palmer Vineyards 8 minutes away.
You can sample their wines before you buy in their rustic Cellar Door welcome snug, or simply visit to have drinks with beautiful panoramic views over their vineyards, with a roaring log fire in cooler months.
I met the co-owner, Jamie, in a business group training programme, and I knew that he would be a great success when he presented the best ‘elevator pitch’ for his business idea.
Jamie is kind and caring, and you will be well looked after if you go on a wine and food tasting adventure with his company, Vine and Country Wine Tours.
You will visit several vineyards to sample the delicious grape varieties on offer, and enjoy a chef prepared meal at one of the stopoffs.
You can arrange to be picked up and dropped off at Benchwood House, to savour the experience without having to worry about drinking and driving.

The Three Legs Brewing Company is an independent small-batch craft brewery based in the heart of East Sussex, England, with a lively taproom in Bexhill-on-Sea.
Renowned for their modern, hop-forward beers brewed with passion and precision, they also serve a curated selection of natural wines, local ciders, and artisanal snacks such as cheese and charcuterie.
The taproom offers a warm, friendly atmosphere — the perfect spot to relax, sample their latest creations, or take your favourites home to enjoy later.

Winner of Camra pub awards for several years Rye Waterworks Micropub is a true gem — the very first of its kind to open in East Sussex.
Housed in a beautifully restored historic building, it was once a water pump house for over 300 years and later a 19th-century soup kitchen — both now charmingly woven into the pub’s unique character.
This family-run brewery and taproom proudly pours eight local ales, two keg beers, and twelve local ciders, alongside a handpicked selection of wines, gins, and soft drinks.
Settle in with the warm buzz of live music as you indulge in their famous scotch eggs and pork pies, perfectly paired with homemade chutney and English mustards — the ideal accompaniment to their refined, delicious, local brews.
The Long Man Brewery is located in the heart of the Sussex Downs and deserves special mention even though it is about 52 minutes away.
The brewery produces internationally acclaimed award winning beer, and have won best beer style in the World Beer Awards multiple times.
They won international gold and silver awards again in 2024 for several of their beers.
You can book a tour and tasting to learn their brewing process from grain to glass and enjoy in-store discounts on their collections.
