Julie Gurr is a highly respected willow artist and basket maker with more than two decades of experience working with this ancient craft.
Based in Iden, north of Rye, just a 19‑minute drive away, she has created everything from traditional baskets to large‑scale sculptural commissions for public spaces, heritage sites, and private clients.
Her work is rooted in traditional English basketry techniques, yet she brings a fresh, contemporary sensitivity to every piece she makes.
Julie grows all her own willow without the use of chemicals, ensuring every creation begins with natural, sustainably grown materials.
She trained extensively in the craft, developing a deep understanding of willow as a living, responsive material.
Over the years, she has become known not only for her beautifully made baskets but also for her thoughtful, patient teaching style, guiding learners with clarity, warmth, and a genuine passion for the craft.
✨ PRIVATE WILLOW WEAVING WORKSHOPS
Julie offers one‑to‑one or small‑group private tuition from her peaceful workshop, where guests can enjoy a hands‑on introduction to willow weaving.
Sessions are tailored to each person’s ability and interests, making them suitable for complete beginners as well as those with some creative experience.
Depending on the length of the session, guests may learn to:
Create a simple basket or decorative piece
Explore traditional weaving techniques
Work with different types of willow
Understand the rhythm, structure, and flow of the craft.
The atmosphere is calm, absorbing, and quietly meditative — a chance to slow down, focus your hands, and enjoy the satisfaction of making something beautiful from natural materials.
💛 WHY WE LOVE THIS EXPERIENCE
Willow weaving with Julie feels like stepping into a slower, more grounded way of being.
Her deep knowledge, gentle teaching style, and the tactile pleasure of working with natural willow make this a truly memorable creative escape.
We especially respect that Julie grows all her own willow without the use of chemicals — a thoughtful, sustainable approach that adds even more meaning to the pieces you create together.
It’s an experience that stays with you — not just for the piece you take home, but for the sense of calm and connection you feel while making it.
📅 BOOKING & AVAILABILITY
As the willow must be soaked for up to two weeks to make it pliable for weaving, advance notice is essential.
Generally, at least four week’s notice is needed to plan and prepare materials, and the more notice given, the better, as Julie balances her weaving with other commitments.
Private tuition is arranged directly with Julie and is available on selected days throughout the year.
